US donates funds to purchase ambulance for Region 10

The US government has responded to a request from the Ministry of Finance for funding for emergency services to assist with the purchase of an ambulance for Region 10.

US Ambassador D. Brent Hardt handed over the cheque for $8,967,387 to Minister of Finance Dr Ashni Singh on Wednesday.

A press release from the Embassy said that the funding for the ambulance was made available through USAID. The ambulance will be deployed to provide public health services in the outlying areas of the region including Great Falls, Number 48 miles, Number 58 miles and Mabura Hill.

At the handing over ceremony, Ambassador Hardt said that the contribution complements ongoing US development assistance to the health sector primarily targeted at HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment but also supports supply chain management for health care commodities including drugs; blood and injection safety and laboratory improvements.

The release said that the donation preceded a medical outreach for Region 10 which will be coordinated through the US Humanitarian Assistance Programme and will provide general medical assistance to residents.

The Ministry of Finance will be responsible to arrange the purchase of the ambulance and to deliver it to the Region 10 administration, the release added.
