A 56-year-old La Bonne Intention, East Coast Demerara man was killed in a hit-and-run accident on Saturday night.
Teril Changa called ‘Mack’ was crossing the LBI public road when he was struck by the vehicle which sped away. Relatives said that they were told that the vehicle that hit the man was a white Toyota Raum. A man has been arrested in connection with the accident but Changa’s brother, Errol Changa said that he did not believe that the police had the right person. He said that the police told him that the suspect will be charged today.
Errol told Stabroek News yesterday that he did not know of the exact circumstances of the accident. He said that the accident occurred a few minutes after 10 pm on Saturday. He said that he was contacted and went to the scene, arriving at about 10:15 pm. “When I went there, he was already dead on the road,” he recounted. He said that he helped to place the body in the police vehicle.
Errol said that a man was later held in relation to the incident. “The guy said he ran him over” after the first car had struck Changa and driven away, he said. He revealed that the police had retrieved a part of the licence plate and it fitted the car of the man currently in custody. However, he said that the car bore no marks of impact. He added that another man had driven after the first car but he got no information.
He said that the police informed him that they will charge the suspect. Errol was hopeful that the post-mortem would be done today.
Changa lived alone and is survived by a sister and four brothers.
