A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) yesterday upbraided the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security and the Ministry of Finance for their carelessness in not having old age pensions ready to be paid on Saturday.
APNU said in a press statement that already poor and suffering old age pensioners braved inclement weather on Saturday and visited post offices to collect the meagre sum which is due to be paid on the first of every month. However, they were told that post offices had no money to pay pensions and that they should return today.
The APNU called the delay disgraceful, inconsiderate and disrespectful to poor Guyanese.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security has since issued a statement advising that old age pension and public assistance payments for June would start today.
No explanation was given for the delay.
