Attorney General Anil Nandlall yesterday expressed frustration over the leader of the opposition’s position to not support the appointments of the current acting Chief Justice and acting Chancellor of the Judiciary.
The PPP “continues to view with deep concern the position taken by the leader of the opposition in respect of his non support of the chancellor and the chief justice,” Nandlall stated at during a press conference at Freedom House yesterday.
The AG said the PPP was committed to the appointing both men. He said the opposition was yet to give a definitive reason as to why support is being withheld.
Nandlall stated that Chief Justice (ag) Ian Chang and Chancellor of the Judiciary (ag) Carl Singh “have served with distinction.”
Neither have showcased a “lack of competence”, so the opposition’s position is without merit, he said, adding that the long overdue process needs to be addressed and the opposition has an obligation to work with the government in this respect.
“When these office holders are acting they may be subject to the control of persons,” Nandlall said. While this was not a concern for Guyana, he said, the international community may perceive the lack of appointment as an unhealthy situation in Guyana’s judiciary system.
He said the two offices are the highest in the judiciary and as a result confirmation is essential.
He accused the opposition of holding the government ransom by not showing support.
The Constitution states that the President and the Leader of the Opposition must consult on the appointments, however ultimately the decision is made by the Head of State.
