A father of two was yesterday charged after allegedly stealing $81,420 worth in items from Roti Express Snackette.
George Khan, a 36-year-old salesman, of Lot 91, Second Street, Alexander Village denied the charge when it was read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
It is alleged that between June 1 and 2 at Georgetown, he broke and entered Roti Express Snackette at King and North Road, and stole a case of water, a music set, a microwave, bin, crates of eggs and cases of drinks all totalling $81,420, property of Mahadeo Doodnauth.
Counsel for the accused, Paul Fung-a-Fat, advanced to the court that Khan was found half an hour away from the incident and the police never found the articles on him. In addition, Fung-a-Fat said there were no witnesses and investigations were incomplete.
Khan told the court that he was coming from the movies and was about to catch a taxi when the police approached him and took him back to the building for him to claim the items.
The defendant however maintained he knew nothing of the charge levelled against him.
Prosecutor Venetta Pindar objected to bail on the ground that the accused had previously been arraigned for similar offences.
Bail was set at $100,000 and Khan is scheduled to return on June 28.
