Guyana Shines, an initiative launched by US Ambassador D Brent Hardt in collaboration with the US, UK, Canada and the EU diplomatic missions launched its documentary video and volunteer awards ceremony at the Theatre Guild on Wednesday.
The ceremony was held in observance of World En-vironment Day on Wednesday. Hardt said Guyana Shines teamed up with residents in communities around Georgetown to support a clean-up campaign. He stated that over 50 Guyana Shines volunteers visited schools to make presentations to students to increase their awareness of the harmful effects of littering and pollution. He urged young Guyanese to stop talking and start doing.
Forty-three volunteers were awarded at the event and the Guyana Shines documentary was also launched. The group hopes it will inform and motivate citizens to become part of the solution.
Hardt emphasised that the programme which was launched over one year ago also supported hands-on, clean-up projects within the Lodge and Tucville neighbourhoods in Georgetown.
Youth Challenge Guyana, Youth Media Guyana, Rotary and Lions clubs, churches and private sector groups are also part of the initiative.
