Sections of West Berbice were given a facelift over the past few days when the National Youth Development Network (NYDN) ventured out to undertake community projects. Bevon Currie, secretary of the youth-based non-governmental organization that has been in existence for eight years told Stabroek News that the project started at Zee-Zight with the upgrading of the nursery school environment.
He said they weeded and cleaned the compound and painted the slides and swings to give the play area a facelift.
A similar exercise was also done to the children’s play park at Blairmont. Members of the group “cleaned and painted the fence” and donated sports gear to the Blairmont female cricket team. They also managed to put together a regional committee to conduct work in Region Five, headed by Anson Barrington. The committee comprises senior vice-president, Shazeena Seetayah and junior vice-president as well as Adel Lilly; Usha Smith, director of Humanitarian & Social Services and assistant secretary-treasurer, Jennifer Smith.
Currie said that part of their outreach is to help young people in their communities to develop themselves in a positive way.
The final project was the enhancing of the environment of the Ithaca Nursery School and by extension the Ithaca Primary which are housed in the same compound.
The NYDN also “donated some plant seeds to a group of women who want to get into some form of horticulture as an income generating venture.” The seeds and cricket gear were acquired from the Food for the Poor organization while Harris Paints donated the paint.
Currie thanked the donors for making the outreach possible and for “aiding us in the job that we are doing in order to make a difference in the communities and help with the development of young people throughout Guyana.”
