Four Members of Parliament (MPs) were sent to Canada for training to strengthen the scrutiny of public spending estimates.
The Global Organisation of Parliamentarians Against Corruption (GOPAC) Canada provided both financial and organisational assistance for the training, following a request by Speaker Raphael Trotman to Canadian High Commissioner to Guyana David Devine, the National Assembly said yesterday in a statement.
MPs Bibi Shadick and Manzoor Nadir of the PPP/C as well as Volda Lawrence of APNU and Trevor Williams of the AFC, who are all members of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), attended the training, accompanied by Sonia Maxwell, Clerk of Committees attached to the Economic Services Committee.
According to the statement, the training began in Ottawa, Canada on Monday and ended yesterday. It noted that it was suggested by a Consultant with GOPAC Canada that the four MPs form a Sub-Committee of the PAC and submit a report containing recommendations following their visit.
