The woman Yohan Greenidge was reportedly protecting on Thursday when he was shot has denied that he was protecting her from being physically abused by his brother, who is her reputed husband.
Instead, she insists, her husband and his brother had a longstanding feud and that was the real genesis of the altercation.
The woman, who refused to have her name published, contacted this newspaper yesterday. She said that her husband was badly beaten by Greenidge and his friends before he retaliated and shot the young man.
The police on Thursday said that Greenidge was protecting his pregnant sister-in-law at a Roxanne Burnham address when he was shot by his brother who has since gone into hiding.
However, the seven-month pregnant woman said the police did not take a statement from her as she had left the home when they visited and the information released may have been given by other persons in the home who are against her reputed husband.
According to the woman, she and her reputed husband—with whom she also has a two-year-old daughter—were arguing but it was not physical.
“He [Greenidge] come in the house… and he start talking up like if he was picking up on me side. But then he start talking other things and they start arguing over a longstanding problem,” the woman said.
She indicated that the two brothers do not live at the same address but have been at loggerheads for sometime. She recalled that when she was pregnant with her first child, she had to take her bloodied husband for medical treatment after he was beaten by his brother.
The woman said that on Thursday the two brothers started to fight and her husband was beaten and he later left to keep the peace. However, she alleged, his brother and some friends followed him and dealt him a trashing.
His face was bloodied when they were done. According to the woman, she is not sure where her husband got the gun as she has never seen him with one, but she saw him running behind his brother who was walking in the opposite direction. The brother reportedly turned around and saw her husband with the gun and picked up a brick and was rushing towards him when he fired a shot and ran.
“I don’t know where he get the gun, but if I was in he position I would do the same thing because he get beat up bad; and he was rushing towards him so he fire a shot,” the woman said.
Her husband then fled the scene and the woman said she left and visited a friend, during which time, the police visited the home.
She said the house is owned by her father-in-law and he also lives there with his wife.
She said that late Thursday night she left the residence and she has not heard from her husband since the incident.
But before she left, she said, her brother-in-law had returned from being treated at the hospital and issued threats against her husband.
“Right now I am very worried because I sure he regret what he did but he has not called me since and I am worried,” the woman said.
