With Bushy Park’s Circuit in Barbados under renovations, the second leg of the Caribbean Motor Racing Championships (CMRC) billed for September will be staged in Jamaica or here in Guyana.
The renovations to Bushy Park will not be completed in time for the September event hence the CMRC committee has identified two suitable venues, Jamwest Motor Circuit and the South Dakota Circuit.
According to president of the Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club (GMR&SC), Johnny Carpenter, the venue which will host the second leg of the three-leg championships will be announced next week following meetings with other executive members of the CMRC.
Jamwest, Jamaica’s newest motor sport circuit features an even playing field for both all wheel and two wheel drive machines. The circuit encompasses long straight-aways, sweeping corners and lengthy run off areas. Some organizers said that the venue is adequate for hosting the second leg.
The other choice is Timehri, home to most of Guyana’s motor racing meets and where the final leg of the CMRC will be staged in November.
According to a source, most Caribbean drivers prefer the South Dakota alternative.
The source noted that it is more costly to travel to Jamaica as opposed to Guyana and most drivers are inclined to make the trip to the ‘Land of Many Waters’ instead.
Moreover, the machines can remain in Guyana for the final leg two months later. That would alleviate the cost of freight.
Nonetheless, the event is assured to fans from across the motor racing Diaspora when it rolls off on September 1.
Meanwhile, after the first leg which held at the Dover Raceway in St. Ann, Jamaica last month, the daredevils from the ‘Land of Wood and Water’ are currently in the driver’s seat on 170 points. Barbados and Guyana are in their rearview mirror on 56 and 34 points respectively.
