United States of America-based sprinter, Adam Harris, says he is expecting a good performance when he competes in the men’s 100m at the 27th New Jersey International Invitational at the Colts Neck High School.
Harris, who recently spoke with Stabroek Sport, said he was ‘fine-tuning’ the technical aspect of his start for today’s 100m.
“I just need to work on my start and my times should be close to the times I just ran (last weekend),” he said during the interview.
The 2008 Olympian last weekend clocked a wind-aided (+4.1) 10.09 seconds in the men’s 100m final at the Star Athletics Sprint Series in Florida. The performance is now ranked no. 30 (Wind assisted marks) on the IAAF website.
Harris, of Guyanese parentage, clocked 10.14 seconds (+ 2.3) in heat one of the preliminary event and finished fourth in the final which was won by Adidas’ Jeff Demps who clocked 9.99 seconds. Demps’ team-mate Gerald Phiri clocked 10.00 seconds for a second place finish while Kemar Hyman finished third in 10.02 seconds.
Harris ran 10.09 seconds four years ago at a track meet in Ann Arbor, told Stabroek Sport that last weekend’s run was not smooth as the atmosphere was windy.
Harris said his start in the 100m final was better than the one in the preliminary round but said he experienced some difficulties in the final with his drive-phase.
“In the final my start was better but the drive phase was not good and the middle I kind of jerked a step then sped back up at the finish,” he said.
However, the 25-year-old said he was content with his consistency.
“Yes! I am fine with that time because now I know my legs are ready to go that fast without the wind,” he stated.
He also told Stabroek Sport that he is hoping to reduce his 10.18 seconds (+0.4) performance which was recorded on May 18 at an USATF Masters/Open track meet at the Ansin Sports Complex.
“The 10.18 (seconds) I ran before was almost no wind and that was a smooth race. Both the races (last weekend preliminary and final) were not anywhere near as smooth this time and because I am getting in better shape I will definitely drop time from the 10.18 (seconds), ” he noted.
