A taxi driver accused of chopping another taxi driver on his arm was placed on $80,000 bail when the matter was heard in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
Martin Doorgen, 38, of 117 Regent Road, Bourda denied the charge when it was read to him by Magistrate Judy Latchman.
It is alleged that on June 6 at Cornhill Street, Doorgen unlawfully assaulted Jermaine Davis so as to cause him actual bodily harm.
Davis, who was chopped twice on his arm, was absent at the time of the hearing.
Doorgen was unrepresented by counsel and in an application for bail on his own behalf, he told the court that he works a hire car and the complainant works with a private car and they got into an argument over parking space at the Stabroek Market car park.
Prosecutor Simone Payne had no objection to bail and it was granted in the sum of $80,000.
The matter will be called again in Court 10 on June 24.
