A Brazilian national was yesterday afternoon discovered dead in a clump of bushes at Jumbie Backdam, Mahdia with her hands tied and it believed that she was beaten.
Up to press time last evening no name was available for the woman but this newspaper was reliably informed that her husband who is also a Brazilian national was detained for questioning.
Police in a press release said that a team of police ranks was dispatched to the area following a report received at about 1300 hours that a murder had occurred resulting in the death of a female.
At the time of the release no other information was available. Subsequent efforts to contact senior police officials for further information were futile. The circumstances surrounding the woman’s death are sketchy. Stabroek News was told that the dead woman’s husband left their camp with some workers and went off to the Potaro area to look for more men to work on his dredge.
After some time it was reported that the workers did not see the woman and later went in search of her. Sources say that she was later discovered dead in bushes.
According to the sources the woman’s hands were tied at the wrist and she had lacerations to her head and other parts of her body.
Stabroek News was told that there is at least one worker who is unaccounted for and he is being treated as a suspect in the woman’s death.
Police later went into the area which is located about half an hour from the central Mahdia area and retrieved the body which is now at the Mahdia Hospital morgue awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Within recent times there have been several instances where Brazilian women have been found murdered at interior locations, the last being Bartica businesswoman Elisangla Da Silva Figuerado whose decomposing remains were found at her Second Avenue home.
A woman who is also a Brazilian national was the prime suspect in that incident.
