A man was on Wednesday sentenced to a three-year prison term after he was found guilty of possession of a quantity of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking
Paul Persaud, 20, of Hill Street Albouystown, was also fined $51,420 when his trial concluded in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The charge stated that on October 10th of last year, Persaud was found on Albouys Street, Albouystown with a bag in his hand, containing several small Ziploc bags of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis.
Prosecutor Vishnu Hunt said that a thorough investigation had later revealed the items to be cannabis, and Persaud was charged. He had pleaded not guilty.
Magistrate Judy Latchman, who presided over the trial, found Persaud guilty and sentenced him to three years along with the fine.
When the Magistrate asked if he had anything to say, Persaud burst into tears and said he was innocent.
