Roots and Culture Media will be screening a documentary film on the life of Walter Rodney and launching a companion book today at the National Library, 77 Church Street, Georgetown from 5.30 – 8.00 pm. Admission is free and it is open to all ages.
A release from Red Thread said that the film entitled, ‘WAR Stories: Walter Anthony Rodney’ was directed by Clairmont Chung who also edited the companion book – ‘Walter A. Rodney: A Promise of Revolution.’ The screening and book launch will be followed by a discussion by a panel featuring Chung and youth activist, Francis Bailey and others.
The film traces Rodney’s life from boyhood in Guyana, his studies and activism abroad and in Guyana until his tragic death.
The film weaves rare archival footage of Rodney with several local and international interviews. The film has been screened at several festivals and universities in the Caribbean, Africa, Europe and North America. It is described in the release as a poetic tribute to Rodney.
The book was conceived and published after the film’s debut and is a collection of some of the recollections and analyses recorded in the interviews done while making the film. A reviewer described the book as “a compelling and intimate portrait of the life and legacy of Dr Walter Rodney.”
