Protest against proposed hike in electricity tariff

Protest against proposed hike in electricity tariff: Activist Mark Benschop yesterday organised a protest outside the Office of the Prime Minister on Wight’s Lane, Kingston to protest the proposed 26.7% increase in the Guyana Power and Light Inc’s electricity tariff. Benschop said it would be more than just a burden on poor people. He added that the increase will not only affect APNU and AFC supporters, but also PPP supporters. AFC leader Khemraj Ramjattan, who joined Benschop, said that more Guyanese need to come out to protest in view of the government’s reticence in listening to the people of Guyana. “They have been asking consumers to prepay their light bills, why doesn’t the government prepay GPL with the $6.1 billion that we gave it so that it will get the $5.2 billion to cut line losses and commercial losses.” From left are Benschop, three other protestors and Ramjattan outside the entranceway to the Office of the Prime Minister.20130615Photo1
