MONACO, CMC – The International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) has annulled the joint 100 metres junior world record of 10.01 seconds clocked by Japanese sprinter Yoshihide Kiryu.
The 17-year-old Kiryu lost his joint 100m junior world record after officials ruled the equipment used for measuring wind speed at the Oda Memorial in Hiroshima on April 29 was not up to international standards.
His performance had tied the same time ran by Trinidad and Tobago’s Darrel Brown and American Jeffery Demps. They were a year older than Kiryu when they recorded their 10.01-second times.
The IAAF has informed the Japan Association of Athletics Federations (JAAF) that the time was not valid, according to Kyodo News.
Kiryu had run with a tail wind measured at 0.9 metres per second, but the measuring equipment was not up to current international standards, which call for an ultrasonic wind gauge, Kyodo said.
The time, which makes him the ninth fastest 100m sprinter of the year, will continue to be listed in the IAAF rankings.
