Mother of two knifed to death
A mother of two was on June 8 knifed to death allegedly by her reputed husband who then attempted to commit suicide but was found a short distance from their Kuru Kururu Squatting Area, Soesdyke-Linden Highway residence. Twenty-three-year-old Dhaneza Ramdat called ‘Reshma’ was found dead in her yard by her brother, while her 40-year-old reputed husband Shameer Ali was hospitalized for a self-inflicted throat injury.

More than two years after the completion of the $54.4 million Wakenaam airstrip built by the government, residents of the island say it has only been used once for reasons unrelated to its primary purpose, bolstering arguments that it was never necessary.
DDL manager killed in Sheriff Street accident
A Demerara Distillers Limited Manager was killed after a speeding vehicle struck him down as he was crossing Sheriff Street on his way to his Garnett Street residence. Harrybarran Singh, 57 years old and who served DDL for over 37 years, was returning to his Lot 63 Garnett Street home when the car hit him, killing him instantly.
Opposition should call gov’t ‘bluff’ on procurement body – Ramkarran
The opposition should call government’s “bluff” on the Public Procurement Commis-sion (PPC), says former PPP stalwart Ralph Ramkarran who posited that possible motives for the present stance of the administration are the sabotaging of the setting up of the body and a determination to do nothing to stop corruption.

Cop drops dead chasing escapee in Sophia – entangled in illegal livewires
A police constable who was chasing after an escaped prisoner was later discovered dead in a North Sophia alleyway and it is believed that he came into contact with an illegal livewire, one of several dozen located there. Dorwin Pitman, 23, of Lot 23 North Road, Bourda was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Opposition parties blast GPL over proposed tariff increase
The parliamentary opposition parties have come out against the proposed 26.7 per cent Guyana Power and Light tariff increase, with the AFC urging Guyanese to vigorously resist it, while the APNU called for the removal of the entire board.
City must pay GPL the $1B it owes by June 15 or be disconnected
The Guyana Power and Light (GPL) has warned the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) to pay its outstanding balance of $1,090,525,575 by June 15 or be disconnected. In a letter dated June 7, to Mayor of Georgetown, Hamilton Green, GPL said the amount owed to the council up to April of this year included an increase of $186,711,962 since its last correspondence in August 2012. The council had owed $924,169,735 up to the end of June last year.

Decision on Chief Election Officer stayed
A letter sent by an attorney representing Chief Election Officer Gocool Boodoo has called on the elections commission not to conclude its deliberation on whether his contract is renewed until his performance appraisals for 2012 and 2013 are completed and this led to a deferral of a decision on his fate. The letter dated June 6, 2013 and addressed to Guyana Elections Commission Chair-man, Dr Steve Surujbally said Boodoo was denied due process.
Brazilian woman murdered in Jumbie Backdam
A Brazilian national was discovered dead in a clump of bushes at Jumbie Backdam, Mahdia with her hands tied and it believed that she was beaten. Up to press time on Tuesday no name was available for the woman but this newspaper was reliably informed that her husband who is also a Brazilian national was detained for questioning.
Bounty Hall boy dies after alleged beating at school -family urges probe
An eleven-year-old boy died last month after he was reportedly beaten with a cricket bat while at school and his relatives are accusing the school of dragging its feet on the investigation. Troy Ryan Livan, a resident of Bounty Hall, Essequibo and a Grade Six student of the 8th of May Primary School died on May 16. Though the boy had managed to tell relatives before he died that he was attacked by three male students and hit in the head, neck and belly, a post-mortem examination stated that the child died from diabetes, according to his aunt Judy Livan. Judy said she is convinced that it was the blows that killed the child since he was never ill except for the customary cold and fever.

Girl killed by propeller at Ekereku
Just five days after celebrating her 17th birthday, a young woman was killed after she was struck by an airplane propeller. Police reported that around 17:40 hrs on Wednesday Raquel Joseph, died after she ended up in the path of the propeller of a single-engine Cessna 172 aircraft that had just landed at the Ekereku Airstrip, Cuyuni, Mazaruni.
Aishalton residents block suspect mining move
Residents of Aishalton, (Upper Takutu/Upper Esse-quibo) blocked an excavator owned by the Romanex Mining Company from heading to the Marudi Mountains where they claimed it would be used in unauthorized alluvial mining.
CAL hiking of ticket prices ‘outrageous’ – Tourism Minister
The Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce is alarmed at the “outrageous increases” in ticket prices by Guyana’s flag carrier Caribbean Airlines (CAL) and accused it of trying to rake in profits from the high demand in the Guyana market.
“We are extremely dissatisfied with the arbitrary increases in prices for tickets, in some cases a 50 minutes flight to Trinidad and Tobago costs US$425,” Minister Irfaan Ali said in a press release.

The Ministry of Education said that Bounty Hall, Essequibo schoolchild Ryan Livan died of diabetes and there was no evidence that he had suffered injuries during a fight at his school as alleged by his relatives.

International probe into Walter Rodney killing
-AFC calls for timetable
Thirty-three years after he died, the PPP/C government announced that an international Commission of Inquiry (COI) is to be set up to determine the circumstances surrounding the death of renowned academic and political activist Walter Rodney.The announcement, which coincided with the 33rd anniversary of Rodney’s death, was made during the sitting of the National Assembly by Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, who said that several factors, including the Rodney family’s persistent search for truth, have prompted the decision. For the over 20 years it has been in office, the PPP/C had not yielded to calls for such a probe prior to yesterday.
Rohee bills rejected by opposition
The combined opposition parties voted down bills proposed by Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee, continuing their policy of withholding support after their no-confidence vote against him last year. APNU and the AFC voted against the second readings of the Evidence (Amendment) Bill 2013, the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic (Amendment) Bill 2013 and the Fire Service (Change of Name) Bill 2013, despite presentations by members of government explaining their significance. The opposition has, however, signalled that it could support the passage of the bills if they are presented by another MP.
