Baker Orandel Williams, who was allegedly shot while attempting to rob a policeman of his service revolver, was yesterday arraigned on charges of attempted larceny and robbery. Williams was granted $150,000 bail by Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
It is alleged that on May 31, Williams, 25, of 88 Leopold Street, while in the company of others, including one person armed with a knife, attempted to rob Aaron Seegobin of a revolver and ammunition, which were both property of the Guyana Police Force. He was not required to plead to this indictable offence. It was also alleged that on the same date, Williams attempted to steal a BlackBerry smartphone, valued $38,000, from the person of Stephanie Mascol.
He denied the charge.
Counsel for the accused, in an application for reasonable bail, told the court that his client had in fact been shot in the leg by the policeman. The young man’s leg was in a cast when he appeared at the hearing. Prosecutor Renetta Bentham objected to bail, citing the nature, seriousness and prevalence of the offence.
The magistrate after hearing both sides fixed bail at $50,000 on the attempted larceny charge and $100,000 on the charge of attempting to rob the policeman.
Williams is scheduled to return to court on July 15.
