A man was yesterday ordered to pay a $30,000 fine or spend seven months in jail after pleading guilty to cursing his wife and pushing her into a door.
Seepersaud Ramlochan accepted the charges of abusive language and common assault, which stated that on June 17, at Georgetown, he used abusive language to Gangamattie Ramlochan and assaulted her.
When asked if he had anything to say in response to the charges, Ramlochan initially declined but subsequently told the court that he was sorry for what he had done and did not intend to do it. “I am very sorry, but I didn’t mean to do it,” he said.
Ramlochan said that he and wife were in an argument and she pulled his chain, causing it to burst. The man, a carpenter and a father of two, said that his wife has diabetes “and when she sugar high, she does get a lil temper.”
But Prosecutor Vishnu Hunt said that Ramlochan is in the habit of consuming alcohol and abusing his wife.
According to Hunt, on the day in question, he could not find his rum and began abusing his wife. He said that an argument then ensued between the parties and Ramlochan pushed his wife into a door, causing her to stumble. The matter was subsequently reported and he was arrested and charged.
When asked by the magistrate if he consumes alcohol, Ramlochan in a soft tone replied, “not really a lot, yuh know, just lil bit, on weekends.”
His wife was not present at court.
After hearing the case, Magistrate Latchman informed Ramlochan that he would be fined $20,000 with an alternative of spending six months in jail for the assault and $10,000 or one month in jail for using abusive language.
