GT&T Berbice yesterday scored first innings points against the President’s XI in their drawn match while Demerara trounced Essequibo by 10 wickets on the final day of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) U19 Inter-county competition at the Police Sports Club ground, Eve Leary and the Everest Sports Club ground respectively.
Both games were reduced to two days due to the consistent showers which washed out Friday’s scheduled first day.
At Everest, Demerara resuming on their overnight 174-2 declared on 209 for 9 to gain a first innings lead of 112 after Essequibo was routed for 97 in their first innings on Saturday.
Demerara’s Brian Sattaur, who had retired hurt on 101 on Saturday resumed his innings yesterday but fell for 1-06 while Demerara skipper Kamesh Yadram, not out on 33 overnight took his score to 50 before the declaration came. However Essequibo fought back yesterday mainly through the efforts of left arm-spinner Herry Greene who bagged 6 for 68 off 24.4 overs.
Batting a second time Essequibo fell for 167 with Ricardo Peters top scoring with 65 which included four boundaries and one maximum.
He received support from Rajiv Balgobin who made 45 and ensured that Demerara batted a second time.
Batting a second time national opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul (33 not out) and Sattuar (27 not out) took their team to 60 without loss carrying them over the line with 18.2 overs to spare.
Bowling for Demerara, Steven Sankar picked up 3 for 26 and received support from Yadram, Shivram Persaud and Devon Lord who each chipped in with two wickets.
At the Everest Cricket Club ground, the match between Berbice and the President’s X1 ended in a draw due to constant interruptions from the weather
Resuming on 27 without loss, and facing a deficit of 79 runs, the President’s XI were eventually bowled out for 183 in 82 overs just 20 minutes into the final session, an overall second innings lead of 78 runs.
The overnight pair of Martin Pestano-Bell who struck seven fours in his knock of 40 and Ryan Shun, whose 36 included three boundaries maintained their composure at the crease.
Danesh Mangal (36), Vishal Narayan (20), and Avishkar Sewkarran (18) were the other notable run scores.
Bowling for Berbice Derek Narine captured 3 wickets for 10 runs, skipper Shawn Pereira assisted with 3 for 52 and Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai chipped in with two valuable wickets.
After the showers ended the officials eventually declared the match a draw.
At the post match presentation Narine was named player of the match for Berbice.
The next two matches commence tomorrow and will see Berbice taking on Essequibo at the Demerara Cricket Club Ground (DCC) while Demerara play President’s XI at Everest.
