Guyana’s karate champion, Nathalie Gibson is ready to take on her opponents at the upcoming Caribbean Karate Championship in Barbados from July 11-14.
Gibson, who is passionate about the sport since she was a teenager, told Stabroek Sport that her preparations for the championships are on track despite a few challenges such as funding.
The Pan American champion believes she has what it takes to win and become Caribbean champion.
“I believe I can be the champion because I went to the World Cup which comprises of all the different countries and did pretty well,” she said.
The former Dolphin Community High School and Guyana Technical Institute (GTI) graduate affirmed that she will be successful adding that she was expecting to fight at least two of the karatekas from the World Cup International Karate Daigaku Championship that she attended last year.
The 34-year-old athlete, who trains at the Young Men Christian Association (YMCA) recently received sponsorship from the parents of Sachin and Ethan Puri, two karatekas within her club.
Gibson, who is also an instructor, was grateful for the donation and thanked her sponsors.
“I am happy for this, the contribution will do a lot for my trip to Barbados,” she said.
