The fourth edition of Guyana’s premier track and field meet, the Boyce & Jefford Track and Field Classic is approaching and in sustaining the standard of the annual event, Johil Commercial on Friday renewed their sponsorship with the organisers.
The Classic will be held on two days August 17 at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary and the following day at the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) Ground, Linden for the first time.
According to Jennifer Desarz, proprietor of Johil Commercial, the event has aided the development of the sport.
“This event has shown that there is a serious effort to develop a place for track and field and that is to our mind, a very good way to go. We have been privy to several ideas behind the scenes of the event and we continue to be impressed,” Desarz disclosed.
Johil Commercial, located on North Road, is a renowned local supplier of Mining and Farming equipment and according to Brazilian-native Desarz; the event will accomplish great things for the sport in Linden and Guyana by extension.
Added to that Johil said that it was pleased to support the Classic from the inception and was happy to be a part of the event’s growth over the years. Chairman of the Management Committee for the Boyce & Jefford Track and Field Classic, Colin Boyce, thanked Desarz for her initial confidence in the meet and their continued support over the years in developing whet he termed Guyana’s most lucrative athletics competition.
“We are committing to all our sponsors; we will continue to raise the bar for athletics in Guyana with the aim of making this event a signature event. We cannot do that without such support and we are very grateful for your unswerving support,” Boyce indicated.
Apart from doling out lucrative cash prizes to clubs and athletes, the Boyce & Jefford Track and Field Classic IV is aimed at continuing to establish a prominent place for athletics in Guyana and, as was evident last year, leading athletes from the Caribbean are expected to compete against the crème de le crème of Guyana’s athletes.
The second edition in 2011 created history when Guyana’s most successful female athlete Aliann Pompey competed for the first time in Guyana since becoming a double Commonwealth Games medallist. The meet, in its third edition last year, featured Linden’s international track campaigner, Marian Burnett against Caribbean counterparts.
