The fourth annual Trophy Stall chess competition run by the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) will get underway Sunday at the Carifesta Sports Complex, Carifesta Avenue, a press release from the GCF stated.
The tournament, which signals a resumption of the board game after months of inactivity, is being held in the place of the inaugural DDL/CARICOM team tournament which has now been rescheduled for November.
The tournament was officially launched on Saturday at the Trophy Stall’s Bourda Market location, Georgetown.
The event which commences on Sunday at the Carifesta Sports Complex, Carifesta Avenue, takes the place of the inaugural DDL/CARICOM Team Tournament which was being planned for the Caricom weekend but has been re-scheduled to November of this year.
Approximately sixty thousand dollars in cash, trophies and medals will be at stake and all senior and junior chess players are invited to participate in the seven-round tournament which ends on July 7.
Rounds one and two will take place on Sunday at 10:00am; rounds three and four will be played on July 1 from 10:00am while round five will be contested on July 4 at 17:30hrs.
The final two rounds will be contested on July 7 from 10:00am.
Registration for the competition begins at 9:00hrs at the playing venue.
The registration fee for non-members of the federation is $600 for junior players and $800 for senior players. However members will pay a much reduced fee.
Competitors are reminded to walk with a pen to record moves. Each participant would be allotted 90 minutes during each round plus 30 seconds increment beginning from the first move.
The GCF stated in its release that it wished to extend “its sincerest gratitude to the management of the Trophy Stall for re-affirming its support to the growth of local chess and looked forward to its continued partnership in the future.”
