Trinidad and Tobago were crowned the 2013 Guinness Caribbean Street Football champions as inaugural runner-ups Guyana failed to advance beyond the group stages as the regional tournament concluded on Sunday in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
The Soca Warriors, who defeated St. Kitts and Nevis 1-0 in their semi-final excursion, defeated the Dominicans by a 2-0 score line on penalty kicks after regulation time found the scores locked at 1-1.
With the win, the boys from the twin-island republic secured the first prize of US$4000 and the opportunity to be a part of a Futsal coaching course in Jamaica for players and one team official.
Dominica, who defeated St. Lucia 1-0 to earn their final’s berth will be one of the teams to watch in the future editions as they took home US$2000 for their showing.
Competing in Zone ‘A’, Guyana finished a disappointing fifth as they recorded a solitary win throughout their entire preliminary campaign.
In their opening game they lost to eventual winners Trinidad and Tobago 1-0. In their second match-up they defeated Antigua and Barbuda 2-0 to keep their hopes alive.
Needing a win in their final preliminary match to secure a place in the final four, Guyana went down to St. Lucia 2-1 on penalty kicks. Daniel Favorite scored Guyana’s only goal in the penalty shootout.
Defending champions and host St. Vincent and the Grenadines finished fourth as they also failed to impress. St. Lucia who defeated St. Kitts 3-0 in the third place play off won US$1500 while St. Kitts received US$1000 for their efforts.
Eight regional teams took part in the second annual Guinness Street Football Challenge. The inaugural tournament was held in Guyana last year. The Guyana team arrived home Sunday morning.
