Amid growing concerns about the number of fatalities in riverain accidents, the Leader of the Opposition, David Granger is to ask Minister of Works, Robeson Benn about deaths as a result of collisions between January, 1999 and April, 2013 and whether inquiries have been done.
The question was received by Parliament Office on May 28 and the date for the parliamentary order paper is June 28.
Granger is asking Benn for the names of persons killed in riverain and coastal waters as a result of accidental collisions involving vessels, river boats etc in the aforementioned period.
The Opposition Leader is also seeking the dates, names of the rivers and the nearest locations of each of the events. He is also seeking to learn the names and owners of the vessels involved.
Benn will also be asked whether inquiries have been held into any or all of the events and “whether, as a result of the findings of those inquiries, if any, there has been criminal prosecution of persons found to be blameworthy and, if so, what were the outcomes of such prosecution?”
Over the last year or so, around two dozen people have died in riverain accidents.
