The Turkeyen Station Management Committee last week embarked on a massive four-day cleanup campaign to beautify the Turkeyen Police Station and compound.
The project is part of one of the many efforts by the committee to build a better relationship with the police and members of the community.
Chairman of the committee Warren King told Stabroek News that the committee was looking to give the station and its environs a facelift so that it can look more presentable in the area. The funds to carry out the programme he said, were accumulated from a fund raiser they held in the community.
King said that the volunteers came from within the community and the Sophia Boxing Gym while there were also inmates from the Lusignan Prison Service. The interior of the station will also be cleaned he said. “We plan to clean the cells and replace the newspaper with toilet paper instead,” he related.
“This is just the start of the programme; we plan to get other contributions to maintain this work. We plan to clean the entire station and its surroundings,” he said.
The cleanup started on Friday and continued on Saturday with the weeding of the yard and washing of the
building. Painting of the building was scheduled for Sunday and yesterday.
