Lancaster Secondary was yesterday schooled 9-1 by President’s College in the opening match at the Beterverwagting Community Centre ground when play continued in the Digicel Schools nationwide football tournament.
Lancaster Secondary scored their first and only goal in the ninth minute through Keon Hughes who had a clear shot at the goal.
As play progressed in the match, however, President’s College equalised through Derick Mingo who went on to score a hat-trick.
Mingo’s first goal came in the 11th minute and his second followed four minutes later.
It was obvious that the Lancaster Secondary School players lacked some of the fundamental skills of the game as they were unable to increase their score-line while President’s College continue to score through Danesh Persaud, who found the back of the net in the 33rd minute while Mingo registered his third goal three minutes later as the score read 4-1 at half time.
The second half saw President’s College netting five more goals with Akwesi Alfred and Persaud scoring goals one minute apart in the 52nd and 53rd minutes respectively.
David Wilson netted his only goal eight minutes after Persaud’s goal while Von Harding scored in the 68th minute. The final goal was scored by Micheal Baksh in the 72nd minute.
Despite the win, President’s College coach Cecil Chin told Stabroek Sport that he was not fully satisfied with the way his students played.
“There are a lot of areas we need to tighten up on especially the defensive play,” he said.
Chin applauded Digicel for their coach structure which was available to schools and said it was the first match his school would have played for the year.
According to him the school’s facility is not up to standard for competitive play.
In highlighting one of the opposition weaknesses, Chin said the team was short of a good goalkeeper.
“My team was able to capitalize on that,” he said.
Meanwhile, Apex Academy defeated Plaisance Secondary 3-2 in the final game of the afternoon.
