The final two encounters of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB)/GTM U19 three-day inter-county competition between Demerara and Berbice and the President’s XI and Essequibo were both washed out as a result of consistent showers last weekend which rendered grounds, Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) and Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC), unfit for play.
At the end of the second round matches, Demerara led the points table with 31 points with Berbice second on 22.5 points.
The Demerara/Berbice game was set to be a virtual final and any one of the two teams could have emerged champions. Officials are yet to announce a decision with respect to the washed out games. However, the limited overs (one-day) GCB/GTM U19 matches are scheduled to begin this week with the squads and venues to be released soon by the GCB.
Sponsored by insurance giants GTM, who have been sponsoring the tournament for close to 36 years, youngsters from across the length and breadth of the country participated in the U19 three day games which produced competitive, pulsating cricket.
In the first match played at the Police Sports Club ground, Eve Leary, Demerara defeated Essequibo by 10 wickets inside two days with Demerara opening batsman Brian Sattaur smaiing a century and Shivram Persaud bagging five wickets.
Meanwhile, in their first match over at the Everest Sports Club ground, defending champions GT&T Berbice secured first innings points against the President’s XI in their drawn encounter.
In the second round Romario Shepherd-DeJonge’s all-round performances led GT&T Berbice to an outright victory over Essequibo while Demerara recorded an eight-wicket victory over the President’s XI.
