Guyana’s lone female powerlifter at the ongoing Caribbean and Pan American Powerlifting Championship in Orlando, Florida, USA, Kimberly Mars-Loncke lifted her way to the podium yesterday, securing a gold and a bronze medal. According to reports from a member of the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federating (GAPF), Mars-Loncke who earned a silver medal at the Caribbean Championships last year copped gold in the Caribbean Championships and completed the podium for the Pan American Championships.
The two international championships (the 7th Caribbean and the 14th Pan American) are being held simultaneously.
The 84kg strong woman recorded 160kgs in the squat, 80kgs in the bench press and 170kgs in the deadlift for a total of 410kgs.
Today, the Shewdas brothers, Gumendra and Suraj as well as Vijai Rahim, Fabian Ketwaroo, Paul Adams and Winston Stoby will be in action while Randolph Morgan, Anis Ade Thomas and Guyana’s oldest active power lifter Nairanjan Singh (Masters Three) will lift tomorrow.
On Saturday, John ‘Big John’ Edwards, Colin ‘Mr. Clean Chesney and Karel Mars will bring the curtain down. This is the first year that Guyana is fielding a full team at the Pan American level, further testimony to the popularity of this growing sport. The Men’s team is defending their Caribbean title as well.
