Plaisance Secondary defeated the Georgetown Technical Institute (GTI) by a 42-33 score line in their U-20 encounter as action in the Youth Basketball Guyana (YBG) National Schools Basketball Festival (NSBF) continued at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on Tuesday.
Shooting guard Nikkoloi Smith continued his dominant displays as he registered a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds. Team mate Kelvin Yorrick contributed 10 points and six rebounds. Dwight Gray led the GTI offence with 12 points and eight rebounds.
Dominating through the physical presence of Lassar Richards and Gray, GTI in the first period consistently utilized the post move to score easy points on the undersized Plaisance frontcourt.
Forced to take perimeter shots due to the GTI size in the paint, Plaisance through Smith and Yorrick continued to knock down crucial jumpers as the first period expired.
Proving to be an effective tactic in the first period, the Woolford Avenue side continued to keep the score line close as it consistently dominated the interior game with the seconds ticking away.
Locked at 33-33, Plaisance would however turn the tide as an 8-0 run on the fast break in the final two minutes would seal the win for the East Coast side.
Marian Academy overcame the University of Guyana (UG) in their U-20 face- off 31-23. Dale Beresford led all scorers with 10 points while the versatile Dominique Vicente contributed six points, nine rebounds and seven steals.
Quincy Easton led the Turkeyen side with nine points and eight rebounds.
President’s College, compliments of a Sherland Gills effort of eight points and eight rebounds, defeated New Amsterdam Multilateral School 27-19 in their U-17 fixture.
Shafeek Thomas netted 16 points and collected eight rebounds as Kwakwani Secondary pummelled the Guyana School of Agriculture (GSA) in their U-20 clash 55-28. Eon Meredith tallied 11 points in the victory.
Leading all scorers in a losing cause was Emmanuel Archibald who netted 18 points and picked up six rebounds.
St. Roses High led by 17-point tallies by their duo of Anfernee Jervis and Nathan Howell crushed Brickdam Secondary 47-21. Joshua Lee led Brickdam with nine points.
On Monday at the same venue, Linden powerhouse Wismar/Christianburg Secondary trounced GTI by a 53-33 margin in their U-20 matchup. Travin Dryden and Terron Welch netted 20 and 16 points respectively for the victors.
Gray was GTI’s chief offensive threat as he netted 13 points.
In the final slated U-20 encounter, a Leonard Primo 18-point effort powered Kwakwani Secondary to a 58-22 hammering of JC Chandisingh Secondary School. Orwin Samuels netted nine points in the victory. Leading the Berbicians was Michael King who scored nine points.
In the U-17 division, Marian Academy led by a Daniel Lopes 11 point effort blew out Plaisance Secondary 39-14.
Dwayne Obermuller and Ronald Chan-Yuen netted nine points each for the Carifesta Avenue side. Malcolm Fowler top scored for the East Coast unit with four points.
Kwakwani Secondary in the final U-17 match-up edged Bishops High 39-30. Kevin Joseph and Domain Gladstone netted 12 points each in a winning effort. Daniel Haynes tallied 12 points in a losing cause.
