Hectic weekend for cyclists

The nation’s cyclists are in for a hectic weekend as two events organized by National Cycling Coach Hassan Mohamed are scheduled to pedal off tomorrow and Sunday.

Tomorrow, the cyclists will transform the inner circuit of the National Park into a speedway when the 2nd annual Malta Supreme 11-race cycle programme pedals off at 09:00hrs.

The feature race is the 35-lap Schoolboys and Invitational which will be contested by the top junior and senior riders. Other races carded for the day include the BMX age group categories, veterans, uprights and mountain bikes.

Malta Supreme Manager, Clayton McKenzie and Outdoor Manager, Mortimer Stuart will distribute the prizes to the respective winners.

On Sunday, the riders will take their talents to the open road to compete in the 4th annual Seven Seas Multivitamins and Dr. Chase Nerve Foods 50-mile road race on the West Demerara.

The race starts at Wales, proceeds to Bushy Park, Parika then heads to the Demerara Harbour Bridge for the finish.

The veterans, uprights and female riders will turn back at the Uitvlugt ground on the upward journey and finish at the Harbour Bridge. This event is being sponsored by Guyoil under the Castrol Brand.

Race time is 08:00hrs.

USA-based national rider, Geron Williams is the defending champion of the senior race, having won last year’s event in one hour, 53 minutes, 16 seconds. Paul DeNobrega, the Junior Sportsman of the Year, won the junior category last year, but he has since graduated to the senior ranks, making way for a new champion to be crowned this year.

Talim Shaw (Veterans Open), Michael DeRouche (Mountain Bikes) and Naomi Singh (Female) are the defending champions of the other categories.

The first six senior finishers will receive prizes while the first three juniors, veterans, Mountain Bikers and females will pocket prizes as well.

Eight primes will also be up for grabs during the course of the race.

Representatives of both entities will distribute the prizes to the respective winners.
