Dear Editor,
Being a proud and patriotic Guyanese, I take every opportunity to observe Guyana’s politics and politicians. I am constantly embarrassed for Guyana and more personally for Guyana’s President, Mr Donald Ramotar, both in the domestic arena and internationally. He’s always reading from a prepared text and is not very fluent either, and seems to be always ignored by the Caricom prime ministers. While the other leaders show great insight and mostly speak without prepared texts except when making formal presentations, he seems not to have anything to say, other than what is written on the paper that he has.
A case in point, at the current Caricom heads meeting, Grenada’s PM Keith Mitchell and Trinidad’s Kamla Persad-Bissessar both displayed their ability for deep thought, speaking fluently and intelligently on Caribbean transportation woes. Barbados’s Freundel Stuart displayed great statesmanship and praised Burnham. President Ramotar totally ignored his fellow countryman, who was a founder of Caricom although he was at a ceremony to honour the founders, but found a way to invoke the names of former Presidents Jagan and Jagdeo. The look on the other leaders’ faces said it all.
Yours faithfully,
Thomas Bryan
