A man who dealt a blow to his reputed wife’s face—causing her to fall into a window which broke and injured her—while rowing about her cooking was yesterday imprisoned for seven days.
Carlton Macey, 38, accepted that on July 3 at Georgetown, he unlawfully assaulted Jennifer Mahadeo so as to cause her actual bodily harm.
When given a chance to speak, the taxi driver, who is a father of four, said he was very sorry for what he had done and asked Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry before whom he appeared if it was possible for him to be placed on a two-year bond for the matter and in relation to “any other female”.
Presenting the facts of the case, Prosecutor Vernette Pindar said the parties have been in a relationship for the past two years.
She said that on the day in question, the defendant was arguing with the complainant about her cooking when he dealt her a blow to the face causing her to fall into a window which broke and injured her above the left eye.
Pindar said the matter was reported to the police station and Mahadeo was sent for a medical after which Macey was arrested and charged.
Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry examined the medical certificate produced to the court after which she informed that from the document the injuries sustained did not appear to be serious. In the circumstances, she said that Macey would be imprisoned for seven days.
She noted too that the defendant pleaded guilty at the first given opportunity, saving the court considerable time in otherwise having to conduct a trial.
In listing the aggravating circumstances, the magistrate said that at his age, Macey is taken to know the consequences of his actions. She said too that the offence committed is a prevalent one and there is need for deterrence.
The virtual complainant was present at court. The matter was heard at the George-town Magistrates’ Court.
