The Ministry of Local Government has advised the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) that it has to implement tipping fees for every ton of garbage deposited at the Haags Bosch Landfill as of July 1.
However, Mayor of Georgetown Hamilton Green, when contacted, said the tipping fee will take a significant amount of the council’s revenue and given its current financial situation, it simply cannot afford it.
Green said the idea of implementing a tipping fee came after the council submitted its budget for 2013 to the ministry and was advised by the ministry that the budget must include such fees. The mayor added that the council was in no way capable of financing any such initiative given that it was not allowed to broaden its revenue base.
M&CC Public Relations Officer Royston King said more details on the issue will be provided during the course of the week.
