A 36-year-old man accused of having a quantity of cannabis in his possession was yesterday admitted to bail in the sum of $50,000 when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The allegation against Joseph Licorish is that on July 5 at West Watooka, Linden he had in his possession 9 grammes of cannabis.
The businessman who resides at Lot 6 West Watooka denied the charge when it was read to him.
Prosecutor Vernette Pindar who presented the facts of the case said that on the day in question the police were on patrol duties in the West Watooka area where they saw the defendant acting in a suspicious manner.
According to Pindar, the lawmen approached Licorish who threw a blue plastic bag on the road.
She said nothing was found on the defendant’s person but that a search of the bag which he had earlier discarded revealed a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis.
The court then heard that the substance was later weighed in the defendant’s presence and amounted to 9 grammes.
He was subsequently arrested and charged.
Attorney Gordon Gilhuys who represented the accused made an application for his client to be admitted to reasonable bail, stating that he has no previous convictions, poses no risk of flight and has been cooperating with the police.
Licorish was granted bail in the sum of $50,000 and his matter was transferred to the Christianburg Magistrates’ Court for July 23.
