The national under-19 ruggers kicked off the North America Caribbean Rugby Association (NACRA) 15s tournament on a positive note, thrashing St Lucia, 29-10 at the Fatima Ground on Sunday in Mucurapo, Trinidad.
Tries by winger Telroy McCalmont (eight, 22nd minute), Grantley Williams (25th), Jamal Angus (28th) and Kevin Joseph (52nd) propelled the local outfit to their first win in the tournament after a three-year absence.
Skipper, Godfrey Broomes also chipped in with two conversions to pad the score line.
Junior Hunter and Elvin Joseph scored a try apiece for the St Lucian team.
Team Guyana will look to continue their winning ways in the Trophy group of the tournament today when they tackle Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI).
The trophy tournament is for the lesser established U-19 teams in the region such as the TCI, Guyana, St Lucia and T&T President’s 15, the last of which was invited to replace The Bahamas which withdrew. The T&T President’s 15 comprises the second-best squad of T&T players.
The Cup competition or Group A consists of the top Caribbean outfits like the reigning champions, Cayman Islands, Bermuda and Jamaica, and Group B consists of T&T, Mexico and Barbados.
Today’s fixtures: TCI versus Guyana and T&T President’s 15 versus St Lucia; Tomorrow – Cayman versus Bermuda and T&T versus Barbados; July 11 – No matches – development and planning session workshop.
On the final two days, July 12 – TCI faces St Lucia and T&T President’s 15 tackles Guyana and then on July 13 – the finals, third in Pool A versus third in Pool B, second in Pool A versus second in Pool B and first in Pool A versus first in Pool B.
