The Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) is set to name the team for the Goodwill Championship this week following their July Sprint Meet over the weekend which saw good performances from Leon Seaton and a host of others.
Coming out with some experience from the Barbados Swimming Championship held in May, Seaton swam to a new record of 44:75 seconds in the Boys 8 and Under 50m Backstroke at the National Aquatic Centre, Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara.
Seaton, a member of Silver Shark Swim Club was also victorious in the Boys 8 and under 100m IM. He added another victory to his name when he swam away with the 50m Freestyle (35.20 seconds) with a personal best performance while also registering a record.
Olympian and Bishops’ High School student, Brittany van Lange was also impressive at the Centre after swimming unbeaten in her races. The 16 year-old swimmer won the Girls 15-17 50m Freestyle in 29.29 seconds.
Other athletes who were exceptional during the competition were Onika George and Dylan Nurse. The slender swimmer won the Girls 13-14 50 m Freestyle, leaving rivals Accalia Khan, who was recovering from an injury and Dolly Chambers in second and third respectively.
However, Khan bounced back in the Girls 13-14 50m Backstroke as George settled for second.
Nurse easily took the Boys 13-14 50m Freestyle in 28.72 seconds ahead of Joseph de Nobrega and Nicholas Persaud who came second and third respectively.
The rivalry between Amy Grant and Sarah King continued and Grant showed she was the better athlete when she defeated King in both the Girls 11-12 50m Freestyle and Girls 11-12 100m Freestyle. The unstoppable Grant also won the Girls 11-12 50m Backstroke.
Despite the defeat, King of Dorado Swim Speed Club swam first in the Girls 11-12 200m IM finals.
Earlando Mc Rae after his recent return to the waters sped to a first place finish in the Boys 18 and under 50m Freestyle; Joseph Seguina finished second. Rae also won the Boys 18 and Under 100 meter Freestyle.
Hannibal Gaskin and Daniel Scott out-swam their opponents and won the Boys 15-17 50m Freestyle and Boys 11-12 50m Freestyle events respectively.
In the 100m Freestyle events the winners were: Ken Sahadeo – Boys 9-10, Daniel Scott – Boys 11-12, Onika George – Girls 13-14, Joseph de Nobrega – Boys 13-14, Brittany van Lange – Girls 15-17 and Hannibal Gaskin – Boys 15-17.
Naomi King recorded two wins on the second day of the competition in the Girls 9-10 100m Freestyle and 50m Backstroke ahead of Donna Carter.
