St. George’s Secondary edged East Ruimveldt Secondary 4-3 in their Georgetown Zone semifinal encounter as action in the Digicel U18 Secondary Schools Football Tournament continued at the Ministry of Education Ground, Carifesta Avenue yesterday.
Robby McCaggon opened the scoring for St. George’s through a 15th-minute strike. St. Georges would double their advantage in almost identical fashion with Azuma Small etching his name on the scorer’s sheet in the 23rd minute.
Romel Legall would cut the deficit to one for East Ruimveldt as he found the back of the net with a well-placed 24-yard free kick from the right side of the field.
However St. George’s would restore the two-goal advantage in the 43rd minute through an Okeri Codrington header from a right-sided corner kick.
East Ruimveldt would once again claw their way back into proceedings through a Legall 22-yard right-footed free kick from the right flank.
Legall would complete his hat trick six minutes later through a powerful header from a resulting corner kick to level the scores at three apiece. Set up perfectly for a tense finish, St. George’s would find the go ahead winner from a Small penalty kick in the 70th minute.
Stepping up to take the resulting spot kick, Small would strike his right-footed effort flat and hard beyond the reach of the East Ruimveldt custodian to the bottom right hand corner of the goal to book his side’s passage to the final.
St. George’s will now face the winner of the Queen’s College and Guyana Industrial Training Centre (GITC) match-up for the Georgetown Zone title.
Berbice High School (BHS) compliments of doubles from Shimron Hetemyer in the 38th and 57th minutes and Shemar Arrendial in the 70th and 75th minutes pummelled Tagore Memorial High 7-0 in a reduced 80-minute fixture at the Skeldon Community Centre ground in Berbice.
Further goals by Stephan Hinds, Derrick Taylor and Mark Wronge in the 64th, 80th and 82nd minutes respectively completed the rout.
At the Golden Grove Community Centre ground on the East Coast of Demerara, Bladen Hall Secondary defeated Annandale Secondary 3-2 on penalty kicks after regulation time found both sides locked at 1-1.
Kevin Trotman gave Bladen Hall the lead in the 37th minute while Demetry Clarke equalized for Annandale in the 45th minute.
Covent Garden Secondary defeated the Institute of Professional Education (IPE) 1-0 through a Trevor Jones first half penalty strike in the 33rd minute at the Grove Community Centre ground on the East Bank of Demerara.
