Police apprehended three men after an attempted robbery in the Coldingen, ECD area yesterday afternoon and recovered a sub-machine gun in the process.
One of the men, a 23-year-old of Strathspey, was shot in his right foot and sustained injuries to his knee after police opened fire at the New Luck Chinese restaurant. He was admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation later in the evening and is currently recovering from his injuries under armed guard.
According to witnesses, the men were armed with multiple guns. A mobile police patrol was tipped off and accosted the three men before they were able to commit the robbery.
A police press release last night stated that the men were found in possession of a Kel-Tec 9mm sub-machine gun, with nine rounds, and a .38 revolver, with two rounds.
In the restaurant where the shooting and arresting took place, one of the men’s slippers were left on the ground along with a bloody cap and a bandana. There was blood on the ground from the injuries sustained. The owners of the restaurant refused to comment only stating that no robbery happened and the police had given chase and caught the men. Witnesses stated that the men were sitting down before the police entered and the men then attempted to flee the restaurant. It was at that point one of the officers discharged his weapon injuring one of them.
Another of the robbers, also of Strathspey, was also treated at the GPHC for lacerations to his face, but was later released into police custody. As for the third man he was taken immediately into custody. Witnesses told Stabroek News that it was quite a scuffle but that the mobile police patrol quickly took control of the situation and it was over as quickly as it began.
