Ten persons yesterday graduated from a gym instructor and administrator training programme for a gym that is to be established this August which will cater for inmates at the Georgetown Prison.
Donald Sinclair Director of Flex Night Incorporated stated that Demerara Mutual Life Assurance Society, which is the sole sponsor of the programme, donated $3 million worth of gym equipment.
Sinclair, who organised the programme, said the training was held over the course of two months. He added that in October last year, he approached the Prison Service concerning the establishment of a gym for inmates. He was given the green light and he advised yesterday that the gym would be situated at the Georgetown Prison.
He mentioned that training seminars were held where persons were not only trained physically but mentally, to manage the gym efficiently.
He added that trainees had two practical sessions at Fitness Paradise Gym, which is located at the roof of Brandsville Hotel.
Some of the equipment that is to be used in the gym would be partly imported and some made locally, stated Sinclair. He said before the equipment is placed in the gym an inspection would be conducted to ensure that the facility is well managed. He added that after one year, another inspection would take place to evaluate the management of the gym.
Clarence Perry, Marketing Director of Demerara Mutual, said he believed the graduates will aid in the rehabilitation process of the inmates. He continued that Physical Education is critical for a healthy life and the graduates will have the responsibility of training the inmates.
