A man, believed to be homeless, was last evening the victim of a hit and run on Homestretch Avenue.
“I was coming in the opposite direction east when I saw the man on the other side walking towards the Cultural Centre… a yellow wagon was speeding behind him and before you know it he just pick he off he foot and bam!,” an eyewitness last evening related to Stabroek News. “When I think the car would stop, he just drive away, beat the light at the Cultural Centre and go like into South,” she added.
Another female driver, who also witnessed the accident, said that she had not realised the man had died. When the vehicle sped off after hitting him, she followed it. However, she did not pursue her chase after the driver of the car jumped the red light at the Mandela Avenue intersection, near the Cultural Centre. Instead, the woman said that she returned to the scene to render assistance to the pedestrian, only to realise that he had died and was lying in the corner.
From appearances, the man seemed homeless.
He was of East Indian ancestry and seemed to be in his mid to late 40s or early 50s, about 5 feet in height with a small build. He was clad in what appeared to be self-made khaki shorts and a light colour torn shirt. He wore a grey beard and mustache and his hair was uncut.
The body was to the Lyken Funeral home as police launched their investigations.
