Dear Editor,
Guyana is one of the few countries where there is free education and health delivery services at the primary level. Many of the more developed countries do not provide free medical services to their citizens, especially those not covered by medical insurance. It took a long and protracted battle before the Obama administration finally managed to get Congress to agree to provide free medical services to the American people whether or not they are covered by medical insurance.
With the crisis looming in the Eurozone countries access to medical care is all the more problematic especially for the millions who have lost their jobs as a result of the crisis. Many are left at the mercy of charitable healthcare providers but these are hardly adequate to meet the growing demand for health care services.
The current administration must be given credit for the massive investment it has been making in the delivery of health and education services despite resource limitations. Investment in human capital has always been a top national priority, ever since the assumption to office of the PPP/C administration. Our population today is much more functionally literate than at any time in our history. The longevity rate has gone up by over ten years over the past two decades.
No wonder Guyana is regarded by the international community as a model country when it comes to human development.
Yours faithfully,
Hydar Ally
