World number 26, Nicolette Fernandes, shone in both the Men’s and Women’s categories on the third day of the Digicel’s Senior National Squash Championship at the Georgetown Club Courts last evening.
Fernandes in the Men’s division defeated Steven Xavier, 11-9, 11-1 and 11-3 and secured a comfortable victory against Ashley de Groot, 11-4, 11-5 and 11-6.
Jason-Ray Khalil was too good for Ben Mekdeci in the Men’s quarter-finals and won 11-6, 11-2 and 11-3.
The most exciting and competitive match for the evening was contested between Nyron Joseph and former National Champion Regan Pollard. Pollard got the best of the young Joseph winning 11-4, 11-6, 9-11 and 11-3.
Alex Arjoon, defending National champion, lost his first set to Raphael De Groot but recovered and won 10-12, 11-2 and 11-2.
It was a battle between Ashley Khalil and Mary Fung-A-Fat in the semis but Khalil used her power to overcome Fung-A-Fat, winning the first two sets 11-7, 11-7. Fung-A-Fat clinched the third 12-10 but the fourth and victory went to Khalil 12-10.
Meanwhile, the Men’s semi finals will be in full swing today with Fernandes playing against Jason-Ray Khalil and Arjoon facing Regan Pollard.
The Women’s final which is slated for the following day will see Fernandes and Ashley Khalil battling for top honours.
