Dear Editor,
I commend Mr Alexander, Commissioner at the Guyana Elections Commission for doing the noble and righteous thing. I applaud him for demonstrating the fortitude and vigilance that the commission needs.
I would also like to thank the other commissioners and the Chairman for putting the interest of the Guyanese people above their own party for the desired hope of achieving a better Guyana by preserving our semblance of democracy.
This emancipated mind is what is greatly needed and should be cultivated by all citizens so we can be liberated from this plague-ridden, infestation of corruption in Guyana.
This miscalculation of seats, this human error is being characterized by others as a simple mistake, although it had the potential to disenfranchise the will of the people. The voters had entrusted the commission with this immense responsibility of ensuring that their democratic right to vote was honestly represented. This responsibility is one where the highest degree of professional ethics and astuteness is expected. No apologetic expressions can or should be accepted, more especially of the ‘I am only human’ kind.
Mr Gocool Boodoo’s fallibility that we all possess, along with his wealth of knowledge and experience can and should be employed in another field of service, one where the nation and people’s confidence is not a consideration, and where his simple mistakes would not have the potential to jeopardize the will of the people.
Yours faithfully,
Jermaine Figueira
