Tournament fifth and six seeds Khalif Gobin and Oswin Coggins respectively were eliminated in their opening men’s singles encounters as action in the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI) Open commenced at the company’s Recreational Club, Kaieteur Street, Bel Air Park on Wednesday.
Harry Panday defeated the former junior national player Gobin in three sets by a 7-6, 4-6, 3-6 score line while Coggins went down to club mate and rival Jonathan Fagundes in three sets 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.
Also registering victories on the evening in the men’s singles division were Saenden David-Longe and Jonathan Christie.
David-Longe got the better of Owen Lewis by a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 margin whilst Christie easily disposed of Eduardo Arguello 7-5, 6-1.
The action continues today at the same venue with four fixtures programmed to commence at 17:15hrs. In the opening fixture Ronald Murray will oppose Veeraj Judgeo in the men’s singles division.
In the ladies section, Jamaali Holmer will face off with Efanne Doobay while Khemraj Goberdhan and Durai Viayapuri will lock horns in the men’s over 35 division.
In the marquee matchup of the vesper, Andre Erskine will take on Benjettan Osboure in the men’s singles division.
