A team from the Guyana Horse Racing Authority (GHRA) along with veterinarian Dr. Dwight Walron visited four race tracks last weekend and registered 25 two-year-old horses.
Of the steeds registered at the turf clubs, Port Mourant, Kennard Memorial, Norman Singh Memorial and the Rising Sun, 15 were brought in from Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) and the remainder was locally bred. According to Honorary President of the GHRA, Cecil Kennard ”the horses
will now be classified by the members of the GHRA’s classification committee and in complying with the rules, the T&T imported horses will be classified G1 while the locally bred horses depending on their bloodline will be classified as H3, I1 and I3”.
Kennard also told Stabroek Sport yesterday that the GHRA is now in position to know the number of two-year-olds registered to compete at race meets in the country.
He added that “the response was quite encouraging and we were grateful that the horse owners and trainers cooperated by bringing the horses to the various locations to be registered”.
Last weekend’s registration was part of the Authority’s ongoing process to regularize the ‘Sport of Kings’ locally.
The GHRA Honorary President also intimated that he is concerned about the recent inclement weather but is hoping that the planned race meets which includes the August 1 Digicel Horse Race Classic will be able to come off.
Any horse owner or trainer that failed to have their horses registered, those horses will not be allowed to participate in any race meet organized and run under the auspices of the GHRA.
Meanwhile, the GHRA has established a Secretarial Unit at the Kennard Memorial Turf Club, Bush Lot, Corentyne.
An Assistant Secretary is available on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from 08:00hrs to 12:00hrs to assist anyone requiring information concerning classification and registration of horses and any other related matter.
