Antiguan men get life sentences for murdering Guyanese butcher

Two men were on Wednesday sentenced to life in prison in Antigua for the three-year-old murder of Guyanese butcher Rondel George.

According to Antigua Observer, Lasana Anthony “Tony” Riley, 28, of Hatton and Jevorny “Bundy” Richards, 35, of Bendals Village, Saint John, were handed the sentence by Justice Keith Thom.

Both men were apparently stunned by the decision and had to be prompted by police officers to step out of the defendants’ box.

Richards, who appeared to be most dazed, stared blankly in the judge’s direction before he was led to a waiting police bus to be transported to prison, the newspaper reported. In delivering the sentence, Justice Thom said George’s killing was “well designed and executed.”

During the two-week long trial in the High Court before a 12-member jury, Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Anthony Armstrong led evidence that George was lured to Bendals, where he was gunned down on a dirt road on August 21, 2010.

A third man, Chester Joseph, who was charged in connection with George’s murder, walked free after the DPP, having heard the evidence of several witnesses, discontinued the matter against him.
