Mason Seon Jones, who allegedly cuffed and stabbed his ex-girlfriend because she went to Port Kaituma without his knowledge, was yesterday remanded to prison when the case was called in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The woman, Donna Barrington, was a patient of the Georgetown Public Hospital up to the time of the hearing yesterday after being transferred from the Port Kaituma Hospital.
According to Prosecutor Vernette Pindar, on July 19 the complainant was standing by a shop when Jones approached her after she called out to him. He inquired why she travelled to Port Port Kaituma without informing him and then dealt her several cuffs to her face. A scuffle ensued, Pindar explained, during which he drew a knife and stabbed her to her abdomen, breast and left forearm.
Pindar said after the defendant was arrested, he made an oral admission to the unlawful wounding charge but declined to put it in writing.
In her objection to bail, the prosecutor stated that Jones has a pending matter of the same nature with the same complainant for which an arrest warrant had been issued in Matthew’s Ridge for him.
In addition, she said, the woman was still hospitalised.
Jones, 33, of Lot 84 Nismes Public Road, West Demerara was represented by Attorney Trenton Lake who said that contrary to the prosecutor’s contentions, his client has no pending matters or previous convictions.
Overturning counsel’s bail application, Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry remanded the defendant to prison and transferred the matter to Matthew’s Ridge Magistrates’ Court for August 6.
