Young Kevlon Anderson was last Thursday named top cricketer of the 16th Annual Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTYSC)/ TCL Cricket Academy which was held at the Area “H” Ground in Rose Hall, Berbice.
Club Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster, at the closing ceremony, expressed his satisfaction with the 2013 Academy stating that it achieved all of its objectives.
Foster stated that the RHTYSC strongly believes in investing in youths as they are the future adding that all members of Guyana’s leading youth sports club must not only excel on the cricket field but must understand their roles as sports ambassadors and role models.
He advised the youths to put into practice what they have learnt and to develop a culture of hard work, dedication and discipline even as he cautioned them to pursue education.
President of the RHTYSC, Keith Foster, in a passionate address stated that the club over the years has developed a culture of success which he attributed to its developmental programmes.
He added that the club had so far produced six national senior cricketers, one test and ODI player each for the West Indies, 26 national youth cricketers, two female West Indies cricketers and a total of 80 players for Berbice at all levels since 1995, which he again attributed to the academy and other programmes.
He expressed gratitude to the management of TCL especially Mark Bender and Eric Whaul for investing in the future of the RHTYSC.
Head Coach Winston Smith in giving a report of the 2013 Academy stated that special emphasis was placed on batting, bowling, fielding and physical fitness while the importance of personal hygiene, HIV/AIDS, drug abuse, role of the sports ambassador, the history of Berbice cricket and the importance of discipline and education were instilled in the young cricketers through several lectures.
Marketing Manger of TCL (Guy) Limited Whaul praised RHTYSC for hosting a highly successful academy and stated that his company was pleased that its sponsorship was well invested.
Those receiving awards at the conclusion of the Academy s were Best Female – Shauna Vanderstoop, Best U-15 Batsman – Brandon Corlette, Best U-17 Batsman – Veeramootoo Senwansane, Best U-19 Batsman – Jason Anderson, Best U-15 Bowler – Isaiah Lewis, Best U-17 Bowler – Calvin Jeffrey, Best U-19 Bowler – Daniel Lewis, Most Discipline Player – Whitney Poyer, Most Committed – Brett Lee Fraser, and Cricketer of the Academy – Kevlon Anderson.
